Collections

The Ithacan Historical Society has developed a significant collection of photographs, documents and historical information and artefacts relevant to Ithaca and in particular Ithacan migration and settlement in Melbourne and Victoria.

The collection comprises material acquired and donated to the IHS and items belonging to the Ithacan Philanthropic Society which is of historical significance. IPS material is catalogued, archived and stored by the IHS, however, remains the property of the IPS.

Photographic collection

Our collection of photographs preserves moments in history captured by Ithacans in Greece, Australia, and elsewhere. Old photographs are important sources for appreciating the experiences of early migrants who left Ithaca in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

See some highlights from our collection on the website of our partner Victorian Collections here.

If you have old photographs that you would like to see preserved, digitised, and promoted for future generations, please get in touch with us and grow the collection.

Our library

The IHS has a small but valuable library of books and old newspapers relating to Ithaca, the Ionian islands, and a collection of published works by authors of Ithacan origin.

The library is open for researchers — please write to us.

We have recently been seeking to expand the library. We actively acquire relevant literature for the collection. We gladly welcome bequests to the library of relevant material. If you are an author of Ithacan heritage, or have written a work related to Ithaca, its region, or its people, we would gladly acquire your work for our library. Please write to us.

The IHS holds a diverse collection of historical ephemera, ranging from fabrics and traditional costumes and intricate embroidery, to pamphlets and posters.

We are currently in the process of cataloguing this collection.
