A Virtual Archaeological Museum of Ithaca

Thanks to its Odyssean heritage, Ithaca was very early to attract the interest of travellers and archaeologists. Already in the early 19th century, several foreigners conducted archaeological excavations, from which several beautiful ancient objects emerged. At the time, since antiquities were not deemed property of the state by law, most of the ancient finds were transported away from Ithaca. 

In 1806 Sir William Gell published his book entitled The Geography and Antiquities of Ithaca. It was his reflections on two trips he made to Ithaca, in 1801 and 1806, when he travelled in the company of Edward Dodwell. In his work, Gell describes all the visible antiquities of the island. It is thanks to this book that so many other foreign archaeologists pursued excavations on the island. Among them were the Swiss governor of Cephalonia Charle-Philippe de Bosset, the Corsican governor of Ithaca Antonio Guitiera, the Englishman John Fiott/Lee, the Bavarian architect and archaeologist Carl Haller von Hallerstein and the Englishman Thomas Burgon. All of them took their collections with them when they left the island. Most, if not all, of the finds were sold to individuals and museums, or donated to museums in their own countries. Many of these museums today display their collections on their websites, and so those of us who know the archaeology of our island well are able to identify them.

For this reason, we have decided to ‘establish’ a Virtual Archaeological Museum of Ithaca. In this virtual museum, everyone will be just one click away from the archaeological finds of the island, being able to view photographs of the finds on the websites of the museums where the objects are kept. 

Every time we locate more finds, we will update the page with the new information. We invite you to get in contact with us too, if you also locate an archaeological find from Ithaca on the internet. Please inform us, and we will try to identify and document it. Everyone can take part in this effort.

Ένα Νοερό Αρχαιολογικό Μουσείο της Ιθάκης

Χάρη στην οδυσσειακή της κληρονομιά, η Ιθάκη προσέλκυσε το ενδιαφέρον περιηγητών και αρχαιολόγων από πολύ νωρίς. Ήδη στις αρχές του 19ου αιώνα αρκετοί ξένοι διενήργησαν αρχαιολογικές ανασκαφές, από τις οποίες προέκυψαν αρκετά όμορφα αρχαία αντικείμενα. Επειδή τότε οι αρχαιότητες δεν ήταν κρατική ιδιοκτησία, τα περισσότερα αρχαία ευρήματα μεταφέρθηκαν εκτός Ιθάκης. Αρκετά από αυτά μπορούμε σήμερα να τα δούμε στις ιστοσελίδες ξένων μουσείων. 

Το 1806 ο Sir William Gell δημοσίευσε το βιβλίο του με τίτλο The Geography and Antiquities of Ithaca. Ήταν οι εντυπώσεις του από δύο ταξίδια στην Ιθάκη, το 1801 και το 1806, που έκανε παρέα με τον Edward Dodwell. Σε αυτό ο Gell περιγράφει όλες τις ορατές αρχαιότητες του νησιού. Χάρη σε αυτό βιβλίο, άλλοι ξένοι αρχαιολόγοι προχώρησαν σε ανασκαφές. Μεταξύ αυτών ήταν ο  Ελβετός διοικητής της Κεφαλονιάς Charle-Philippe de Bosset, ο Κορσικανός διοικητής της Ιθάκης Antonio Guitiera, ο Άγγλος John Fiott/Lee, ο Βαυαρός αρχιτέκτονας και αρχαιολόγος Carl Haller von Hallerstein και ο Άγγλος Thomas Burgon. Όλοι αυτοί πήραν τις συλλογές τους μαζί τους όταν έφυγαν από το νησί. Τα περισσότερα, αν όχι όλα, τα ευρήματα τα πούλησαν σε ιδιώτες και μουσεία, ή τα δώρισαν σε μουσεία των χωρών τους. Πολλά από αυτά τα μουσεία σήμερα παρουσιάζουν τις συλλογές τους στις ιστοσελίδες τους, κι έτσι εμείς που γνωρίζουμε καλά την αρχαιολογία του νησιού μας είμαστε σε θέση να τα ταυτίσουμε. 

Έτσι αποφασίσαμε να «ιδρύσουμε» ένα Νοερό Αρχαιολογικό Μουσείο της Ιθάκης. Σε αυτό θα μπορεί ο καθένας να έχει πρόσβαση στα αρχαιολογικά ευρήματα της Ιθάκης τα οποία συνοδεύονται από φωτογραφίες, στις ιστοσελίδες των μουσείων όπου φυλάσσονται, με ένα μόνο κλικ. 

Κάθε φορά που εντοπίζουμε νεότερα ευρήματα, θα ανανεώνουμε τη σελίδα με τις νέες πληροφορίες. Σας καλούμε, λοιπόν, αν εντοπίζετε κι εσείς κάποιο εύρημα της Ιθάκης στο διαδίκτυο, να μας ενημερώσετε για την ύπαρξή του κι εμείς θα προσπαθήσουμε να το ταυτίσουμε και να το τεκμηριώσουμε. Όλοι μπορούν να λάβουν μέρος σε αυτή την προσπάθεια.
